On Sunday Pastor Joel will continue with message two of the series "Filled to the Brim:  Contentment in a World of Consumption," with a message titled "Comparison" based on Matthew 20:1-15. One of the quickest ways to kill contentment is to compare. That’s why the Lord says, “Do not covet.” Coveting is comparison plus heightened desire and it will destroy contentment. On Sunday we explore enjoying what we have rather than gazing at another’s.

Don’t forget our projects due THIS Sunday, October 21. We are counting our shirts and shoes to see how things have a way of accumulating. Remember, this is not about guilt. But it is about self-awareness. How many pairs of shoes and how many shirts do you own? What possession did you find that you haven’t used for a few years that you gave away to “its rightful owner?”

In Message 1 of this new series we discovered in Matthew 13:22 Jesus’ warning that wealth has a way of lying to us. Jeff Manion in Satisfied explains how the lie works. “We cram our lives with stuff, compound the clutter, and believe that a little more, just a little more, will finally fill the empty space. We attempt to fill an emotional-spiritual vacuum with a variety of objects, and then we become disillusioned when our effort fails to produce the lasting fullness we chased. Instead of changing tactics, we simply swap things—if a new house doesn’t do it, perhaps an extravagant vacation will. And if a resort fails to do the trick, perhaps a pricey cottage will. I am not making a case here against home or cottage ownership, and vacations can provide much-needed rest and re-create the soul. What we should be concerned about is what we believe these things will do for us. We ask them to fill a void they cannot possibly fill. Disappointed, we move on to the next thing.”

Series Plan
     - Oct. 7:      Enroll in Contentment School
     - Oct. 21:    Comparison
     - Nov. 4:     Identity Shift:  Adopted, Bought, Sealed
     - Nov. 11:    Affluence Challenge:   Enjoy/Serve/Share
     - Nov. 18:   Generous Heart
     - Nov. 25:   Invitation

Opportunities to Serve

BIG Thank You to all those who came and supported our Super Hero Event either through participation, help with the games and food, our committee members and/or donors. We raised about $2,000 for Mommy’s Haven!

This month our offering will be taken for the food costs for our Thanksgiving Day Meal Deliveries (NEXT Sunday, October 28). We plan to deliver about 500 meals to those in need in our community. We invite you and your families to help us for about an hour following the Thanksgiving Day Worship Service. What a blessing to give a homemade meal to our neighbors!

Youth for Christ, (a division of Campus Life for Lake Central and Hanover High School), presents See The Story, an evening of celebration and fellowship. Join us for an inspiring journey through the mission and passion of Youth For Christ to transform the lives of youth, their families, and their communities. Hear powerful stories of life-change and see how together we are making an eternal difference in the lives of young people. You won’t want to miss this evening to celebrate all that God is doing through Youth for Christ!

The Northwest Indiana event is Thursday November 8 at 6:30 p.m. at Avalon Manor, 3550 E. Lincoln Highway, Merrillville, Indiana. It’s a free event. RSVP to Terri, pathwayoutreach@pathwaycrc.org

Angels of Hope Christmas Gift opportunities will be offered again at the beginning of November.

We are looking for a couple more people to help pick up the St. John Starbucks leftover food and dropping it off at the church office. Your commitment would be about once every 2 weeks and take about 10 minutes of your time. We pick up 3 times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Do you run errands at Aldi, Strack’s, or Target on 41 in St John? Then this would be easy for you! See Terri Schaaf!

If you have any questions on the above, please contact Terri Schaaf at pathwayoutreach@pathwaycrc.org.

From Pastor Joel

This Sunday I will continue my series, "Filled to the Brim:  Contentment in a World of Consumption" with Message 2, "Comparison."

Remember the two projects that we’ll report on:
   1.  Count all your shoes and shirts
   2.  Find something that you haven’t used for 3 or 4 years and give it to the rightful owner.           If you haven’t used it in that time, you are NOT the rightful owner.

NEXT Sunday, October 28 we welcome Pastor Joseph Brinks.

Remember to follow me on Twitter @PastorJoelZ.

See you on Sunday,

The Leadership Team
